DEFEND YOURSELF WHEN YOU ARE

OUT AND ABOUT

APFF Asia Pre- Hospital & Fire Rescue Federation

Self-defence is about awareness and confidence. Learning how to fight will make you more focused and give you confidence and that makes you less likely to be a target of violence in the first place.

Here are some guidelines from Panee and Taworn Sirisutthidecha.

Dr.Suvit's Statement

Safety in public toilets

Go with a friend if possible.

Be watchful of surroundings. Be extra careful in isolated or poorly-lit toilets.

Choose the cubicle closest to the exit.

Don't hang your purse on a door hook, or put it on the floor. Keep it close to your body.

Don't dawdle, or spend an hour putting on make-up or talking on the phone.

Get out as soon as possible.

Dr.Suvit's Statement

Safety in your car

In car parks, park in a well-lit area, close to the exit if possible.

Always have keys ready when approaching your car.

Check inside and around your car before entering.

Always keep the car doors locked and windows up, and don't roll down your window for

       anyone approaching you.

Keep your purse hidden on the floor.

Don't stop if someone is flashing headlights at you.

Stay in your car if you have an accident. Assess the situation before getting out.

Dr.Suvit's Statement

Safety in a taxi

Try to sit behind the driver.

Notice details as the car's colour, taxi number, vehicle registration number, characteristics of the driver.

    Stay alert. Don't fall asleep.

Try not to chat to the driver. If you do talk, don't give personal information about yourself.

Tell someone your route, and your expected arrival time.

If you are uncomfortable at all with the taxi driver or situation, get out immediately.
